Veronica Cepede Royg battles past Andrea Gamiz into 2nd round – Buenos Aires ITF 2011
Fourth seeded Paraguayan Veronica Cepede Royg made an epic comeback from a set down to formulate a three setter victory at the AAT Women’s Circuit Buenos Aires 2011, first edition of ITF Women’s Circuit event taking place on the
clay courts in Buenos Aires Argentina. She registered a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 success over Venezuela’s Andrea Gamiz to secure a second round spot on Monday.
World number 234, Royg hit back to conquer the Venezuelan, ranked 119 places below her in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, on their second meeting. She not only maintained her winning record against Gamiz but also inched
towards her second title of the season.
The unseeded Venezuelan made quick in-roads in the opening set. She quickly swiped in entire serves through angled shots from her box of tricks and broke Royg’s serve once to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line. Gamiz defended
all breakpoints faced and cashed in one breakpoint opportunity to her advantage.
19-year-old Royg bumped back in the match in the second set. Despite losing an early serve, she unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel off last few games consecutively and sealed the equaliser by winning six games to four. The
Paraguayan saved four out of five breakpoints faced and cashed in two out of many breakpoint chances to her advantage.
The Paraguayan teenager went berserk in the final set. After Gamiz held her opening serve in the second game, she bombarded massive groundstrokes to go on a five games rampage and earned a breadstick. Royg saved the only breakpoint
faced and cashed in both breakpoint opportunities to her advantage, clinching the decider with this amazing 6-1 score line.
Royg enjoyed a good season so far as she clinched her maiden title of the season at Campos Do Jordao ITF Women’s Circuit event. In addition to this, she made last four appearances at Buenos Aires in March (lost to Florencia Molinero),
Denain ITF (lost to Teliana Pereira) and Asuncion ITF (lost to second seed Florencia Molinero).
Next up for the seed is the Brazilian Roxane Vaisemberg who trashed Argentinean Vanesa Furlanetto in straight sets to reach this spot.
Top seeded American Julia Cohen will be joining Royg in the round of sixteen. She crippled Argentinean wild card Maria Vega with a breadstick to secure this spot. Cohen took almost forty minutes and broke the wild card’s serve
four times to clobber a 6-3, 6-1 victory on their first meeting.
