Veronica Cepede Royg drills through Maria Fernanda Alves in the 2nd round – Santiago ITF 2011
Second seeded Paraguayan, Veronica Cepede Royg, flashed past Brazilian Maria Fernanda Alves with a breadstick at the Copa Providencia Open 2011, an ITF Women’s Circuit event taking place on the clay courts in Santiago, Chile. She
quickly manipulated a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Brazilian veteran and advanced into the final eight on Wednesday.
The Paraguayan teenager, ranked 231st in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier Rankings, breezed past Alves, ranked 137 spots below her, on their third meeting. She not only maintained her winning record against the Brazilian
but also inched towards her second career title.
Royg smoothly entered the Chilean clay courts and bagged entire serves through angled shots from her box of tricks. She cashed in the only break chance to her advantage to pocket the opener with a 6-3 score line. The Paraguayan
fended off entire breakpoints faced and dominated throughout the set to prevail.
The seed went into savage mode in the second set and after unleashing flurry of groundstrokes, she went on a five games killing spree before the Brazilian could hold on. Royg then held her serve once more and handed over a breadstick
to Alves. She dusted away all breakpoints came across and cashed in two break chances to her advantage.
19-year-old Royg won her maiden title this season at the Campos Do Jordao ITF event in July. Furthermore, she made last four showings at Buenos Aires in March, Denain in June and Asuncion in November before entering this tournament.
Next challenge for the second seed is the Argentinean Maria Irigoyen who trashed American qualifier Chieh-yu Hsu in straight sets to reach this spot.
Eighth seeded Slovak Romana Tabak will join the second seed in the round of eight. She destroyed Venezuelan Adriana Perez with a bagel to reach this spot.
The Slovak bombarded powerful backhand slices and groundstrokes to go on a six games rampage and earned a bagel.
Tabak carried her run of form in the final set and continued plucking games until Perez could come on the score sheet for the first time. Later, the Slovak held remaining serves and sealed the victory by winning six games to three.
Next up for the seed is the Dutch Richel Hogenkamp who shocked fourth seeded local star Andrea Koch-Benvenuto in straight sets to set-up this meeting. The Dutchmen cashed in three out of five break chances to her advantage and
brushed off all breakpoints faced.
