Veronica Cepede Royg rallies past Tina Schiechtl into 2nd round – Copa Providencia BCI 2011
Second seeded Paraguayan Veronica Cepede Royg overpowered Austrian Tina Schiechtl in a tipsy turvy three setter match at the Copa Providencia BCI 2011, an ITF Women’s Circuit event taking place on the clay courts in Santiago, Chile.
She formulated a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 success over the world number 331 Schiechtl to book a second round spot on Monday.
19-year-old Royg put up a tremendous display of tennis and after almost two hour long rally, she overwhelmed resilience posed by the Austrian veteran, eight years older than her. Meeting for the first time, the Paraguayan took
one step closer towards her second title of the season and career.
The seed rocketed into the opening and after blasting massive groundstrokes from her box of tricks, she went on a six game killing spree. She brushed off entire breakpoints faced and cashed in three out of five breakpoint opportunities
to her advantage.
A former world number 230, Schiechtl carried her losing ways in the second set and after gifting away an early break of serve, she fell 2-0. However, the Austrian kept her serve in the third game and came on the score sheet for
the first time. Later, she broke Schiechtl serve twice and subsequently bagged the equaliser by winning six games to four.
The higher ranked Paraguayan got back on track in the final set and held her opening serve comfortably. Later, she got the desiderated break in the second game and eventually went 3-0 up. Royg held remaining serves and clinched
the decider with a 6-3 victory.
Next up for the seed is the Brazilian Maria Fernanda Alves who also earned a three setter success to book a round of sixteen spot. She battled past a local wild card entrant Fernanda Brito by converting three out of ten breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage, sealing the deal with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 score line on their first meeting.
Dutch Richel Hogenkamp will join the Paraguayan in the second round. She bounced back to register a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(7) victory over the Brazilian Teliana Pereira on their first encounter.
23-year-old Brazilian quickly made on-roads and pocketed the opening three games in a row. She then held remaining serves and won the set with a 6-3 score line.
Eyeing for a maiden year-to-date title, Hogenkamp fought back hard in the second set and succeeded by cashing in the only breakpoint chance to her advantage. She manipulated a 6-4 victory in almost half an hour.
Both players played their best tennis in the final set but the Dutchwoman dominated in the tie-breaker and subsequently registered a 7-6(7) victory.
