Veronika Popova secures Women’s 100m freestyle gold – European SC Swimming Championships
Veronika Popova of Russia secured gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle on day two of the 2012 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Chartres, France on Friday, November 23.
The Russian swimmer smothered hopes of her opponents in the 100m discipline as she showed her urgency towards the finishing blockade for top position.
With her unrelenting efforts from the start, she gained a marginal lead over her toughest rival and tapped the wall for the crown.
Popova remained nearly two arm-strokes ahead of her following swimmer and reached the top of medal rostrum for gold medal with a timing of 52.86 seconds.
The champion was followed by Jeanette Ottesen Gray of Denmark, who stayed 0.27 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and surfaced on the podium for silver medal by producing an effort of 53.13 seconds.
Third fastest spot of the race was obtained by Charlotte Bonnet of France, who stayed 0.10 seconds slower from her former finisher and hit the finishing wall with an effort of 53.23 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Burcu Dolunay of Turkey, who remained 0.42 seconds away from her foregoing finisher and settled on the wall as fourth fastest swimmer by clocking an effort of 53.65 seconds.
Dolunay was chased by Hanna-Marla Seppala of Finland, who was 0.40 seconds behind her preceding swimmer and tapped the finishing end for fifth position with an effort of 54.05 seconds.
Seppala was followed by Pernille Blume of Denmark, who stayed nearly 0.04 seconds slower from her former finisher and secured sixth place by reporting a time of 54.09 seconds.
Seventh position of the event was obtained by Patricia Castro Ortega of Spain, who stayed 0.27 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 54.36 seconds.
Ortega was trailed by Cecilie Johannessen of Norway, who was only 0.04 seconds slower from her and clocked a time of 54.40 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Popova was contented with her gold finish in the race and stressed that she would try her level best to acquire the same at upcoming World Championships.
