Verrazano thunders to victory in William Hill Haskell Invitational – Horseracing news
Verrazano stormed to a magnificent victory in the William Hill Haskell Invitational (Grade 1) at Monmouth Park in the United States of America on Sunday, July 28, 2013.
The talented runner entered the competition as the outright favourite to succeed and no one was able to match his speed. He was quick right from the start until the end and the punters ended up winning some easy money on him.
Once the traps were opened, it appeared that Verrazano would get a tough time from some of his opponents. However, that was not the case, as the favourite stallion continued building on the momentum he gained in the early stages. He was at a clear advantage,
entering the final few furlongs, but that did not prevent him from pressing hard. In the end, he won by a margin of almost 10 lengths.
Winning trainer Todd Pletcher said about his horse. “This was one of the most impressive - if not the most impressive - races by any three-year-old this year. I would say this was his most impressive race for a horse that's near perfect minus the sloppy
race in the Kentucky Derby.”
He added, “The plan all along was to run in the Haskell, and if he showed he could handle distances of a mile and an eighth plus, the Travers would be a logical next spot. The way he finished today over a track that's been deep and demanding all week with
his ears pricked at the wire showed he handled it pretty well.”
On the other hand, the victorious jockey John Velazquez was also satisfied with the performance of his stallion and said that everything went pretty smoothly in the race. He claimed that there were no issues whatsoever and he knew that the rest of the challengers
would struggle against Verrazano.
Overall, this was the sixth appearance for the American runner, who has now won five races in his career. He has got a brilliant strike rate and has got the ability to match the best in the business at the highest level. His camp would want him to finish
the season on a high by winning some more important races.
