Verrazano too quick for rivals in Pegasus Stakes – Horseracing news
Verrazano proved too hot to handle for his opponents in the Pegasus Stakes (Grade 3) in the United States of America.
The young colt entered the competition with a starting price of 2 to 5, which clearly showed that the bookies had immense confidence in his abilities. Moreover, the punters also had full faith in him, thus risked the maximum number of bets on him.
When the traps were opened, it was pretty much clear that no one would be able to come anywhere closer to the favourite runner. He continued running away from his rivals and ended up winning by more than nine lengths.
John Velazquez, who partnered the winning colt was really pleased with the outcome of the race and said that he was surprised to see such speed, especially after Verrazano had failed to deliver a strong result in his previous outing.
According to the seasoned rider, “It feels good to have him back. There didn't look to be that much speed on paper at all.”
Prior to the victory Verrazano had suffered a shocking defeat in May, which was the first ever of his career. This really raised questions about his fitness and his entire camp was concerned about him. However, he has made everyone proud with his solid run
and will be looking to continue delivering such results with consistency.
Velazquez said that the entire team was excited to see how the three-year-old runner goes after a bad performance.
He added, “I talked to Todd (trainer) this morning and he said just to come out running and make them chase you. His ears were wagging every step of the way and around the 3/8ths pole I gave him a little nudge and he knew it was time to go. It's been a very
exciting weekend, and now I have to rush to make the plane.”
Overall, Verrazano has participated in five races now and has managed to succeed in four of them. He is a really good runner and has got the potential to deliver top quality results at the highest level. It will be interesting to see whether his team runs
him in the United Kingdom for some important events this year.
