Question:

Versailles Castle?

I had heard that the gardens in Versailles Castle had been overhauled and might not be worth visiting until it regrows. Has anyone been there very recently? How does it look? I am taking a short trip to Paris and want to decide if it is worth the trip out of the city.

  1. Yes, definitely go if you have the chance. I haven't been there recently (last spring), but it was definitely one of my favorite days from my trip. Be sure to rent a bicycle to ride around the grounds even if it is a bit messy!

    Have a wonderful time :)

  2. The gardens aren't that great. It's basically just dust and some random green stuff. Also, when I went last June, it was EXTREMELY crowded and you couldn't even see half the stuff because there were so many people. Also, the coolest part of the whole castle, the Hall of Mirrors, was under construction, go figure. I would call before you go if you can and see what's going on. If it's not too crowded, it would be worth it.

  3. uh...i havent been there but i cant tell you from my history knowledge that Versailles is like no other if you have the Chance to see it you must take the Chance. It has beautiful garden, architect and art.

  4. I was there recently, and the gardens were looking very nice. I love discovering new fountains in the gardens. As mentioned in preceding answers, the chateau has more to offer than just the gardens. Take the trip, it is great!

  5. Yes, it's worth it to go for the building itself.

BTW, Versailles is not and never was a castle. It was built several hundred years after the time of castles. Castles were built as forts for protection. Versailles was built to impress by its expense and beauty. An understanding of the purpose of different buildings can add to your enjoyment in seeing them so you might want to get some sort of history book before you go.

  6. The gardens while impressive are only a small part of what is available for viewing at the chateau and its surrounding grounds.

You should certainly go if you have more than three or four days in Paris.
