Versatile swims of University of Melbourne and Macquarie University’s athletes in Gold Coast
University of Melbourne and Macquarie University’s athletes stunned the crowd on day three of the 2011 Australian University Games, in Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Queensland, Australian, on Thursday, September 29. The session of the meet conducted Women’s
and Men’s 4x100m freestyle relay finals.
In the Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay final heat, University of Melbourne’s squad of Marieke Guehrer, Grace Loh, Nicolette Lyttle and Jessica Morrison captured the golden crown with a captivating mark of 4 minutes and 02.82 seconds. Most importantly, University
of Melbourne beat Queensland University’s previous record of 4 minutes and 04.99 seconds, set back in 2010.
In the corresponding race, University of Queensland’s athletes including Jessica Henshaw, Kate Thompson, Rebecca Pegg and Elise Hoyer clinched silver medal with a victorious mark of 4 minutes and 15.67 seconds. Meanwhile, Bond University’s crew of Laura
Van, Bec Thompson, Amy Reid and Jade Neilson settled for bronze in a time of 4 minutes and 24.10 seconds.
Monash University’s squad of Samantha Bennett, Mellissa Murphy, Amanda Barnhoorn and Renee Campbell was placed fourth in a decisive time of 4 minutes and 34.53 seconds, while Macquarie University’s athletes of Nicola O’Brien, Natalie Steel, Rachel Horler
and Melissa Rudgley settled for fifth in a time of 4 minutes and 47.25 seconds.
On the other hand, Macquarie University’s squad of Atte Liimatanien, Christopher Warren, Harrison Pullinger and Donald Cameron won Men’s 4x100m freestyle relay title with a triumphant mark of 3 minutes and 37.97 seconds. In the corresponding swim, University
of Melbourne’s athletes, Raymond Mak, Tom Liubinas, Nick Peachey and Andrew Cameron picked silver in a time of 3 minutes and 40.42 seconds.
Queensland University of Technology earned bronze in a time of 3 minutes and 40.57 seconds, while University of Sydney settled for fourth in a time of 3 minutes and 40.93 seconds. Additionally, University of New South Wales finished fifth in a time of 3
minutes and 42.30 seconds, whereas, Monash University settled for sixth in a time of 3 minutes and 43.54 seconds.
Earlier in the day, Andrew Cameron notched Men’s 400m freestyle title with a victorious mark of 4 minutes and 08.48 seconds. Donald Cameron of Macquarie University got a good position in the meet by getting the silver medal with an impressive time of 4 minutes
and 09.04 seconds, while Mark O’Donnell of Monash University settled for bronze in a time of 4 minutes and 10.86 seconds. In the end, the top-three swimmers of the meets were honoured with accolades after the session’s completion.
