Tottenham Hotspur defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 has called for unity after the shock 0-1 defeat against Wigan last weekend in the Premier League.
The Belgian defender admitted his disappointment at the Wigan defeat, but insists that the club needs to stick together, especially with crucial upcoming matches in the league.
The former Ajax captain has been a revelation ever since he made his move to White Hart Lane back in the summers. The player has been a versatile asset, with the ability to play at centre-back, left-back and in the holding midfield position.
Vertonghen came close to scoring an equalizer against the Latics on Saturday, and was perhaps one of the few Spurs players who stood out in an otherwise dismal and lacklustre performance.
Tottenham lacked their usual fluidity and urgency, and were second best throughout the game. Wigan created more chances, and got the only goal of the game as a second half http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ben-Watson-c7458 strike ensured all three points for the visitors.
Had Tottenham won, they would’ve been in fourth place, with three points clear of Everton. The club now lies in the sixth spot, tied on points with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019, with the Toffees leading on goal difference.
Vertonghen admits that the defeat was hard to swallow, but has called for unity and mental strength, especially in the face of important upcoming fixtures.
Tottenham travel to the Eastlands to face reigning English champions Manchester City this weekend, and then will host fierce local rivals Arsenal at Emirates next week. Speaking to the club’s official website, Vertonghen said:
“The team is strong enough to come back from this defeat. We have a lot of important games ahead; games in Europe and difficult away games. We have to stick together. We know we’re strong in away games and we can win at any away ground.”
The player admitted that the team struggled against Wigan and added:
“We had problems with their system, but normally we turn it around. We just couldn’t do it and it was a shame because it was a big opportunity with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 losing, plus Fulham and Everton drawing. Overall, it was very disappointing.”
