Tottenham Hotspur’s latest defensive signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 is confident that the North London club can push for a title win this coming season.
The Belgian centre-half is happy with what he has seen at Tottenham so far, and believes the club can challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Vertonghen was Spurs’ second signing of the summer, with Icelandic international midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson the first.
New Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas took no time in settling in and signing players that he believes will strengthen the squad and allow the club to contend for major honours.
Tottenham may not be playing in the Champions League this season, but they have shown signs of ambition and determination. Villas-Boas acquired Jan Vertonghen after a tiresome and long running transfer saga.
The player had indicated his interest in signing for the North London club, but there were certain problems with his transfer clause. Vertonghen and former club Ajax were unable to agree on a transfer fee and the percentage of the fee that Vertonghen believed
he was entitled to.
However, the Belgian was able to complete his move to London and signed for the club last week. He is expected to play a leading role for the new-look Tottenham squad and is considered a key and long term signing.
Vertonghen’s addition to the squad will stabilize a Tottenham back four that has long been plagued by injuries. The highly-rated centre-half’s quality lies in his ability to operate as a centre-back and a defensive midfielder. His versatility makes him a
very important player.
Vertonghen is no stranger to winning silverware after he led his former club Ajax to two back-to-back Dutch Eredivisie titles.
The player is hopeful of winning silverware with his new club. Speaking to Spurs TV, he said:
"I am delighted to be here. Over the last years Spurs have become a very big club in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749.”
"They finished in the top four a few times and for me it was one of the best clubs in the Premier League and that is one of the reasons I wanted to come here.”
"There is a lot of quality and I think everybody wants to make a good season.”
"Last year in the first six or seven months, they were up there for the title, the championship.”
"After that it was not that well, but this year I think we will compete a few more months longer."
