Tottenham Hotspur summer signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 insists that Tottenham’s slow start and inconsistency has cost them points in the Premier League.
The Belgian defender has reminded his teammates that they have to play at their best for the full 90 minutes in the games to come. Tottenham were recently punished for a sloppy start to their game against Chelsea, and ended up losing 4-2 to the European
champions.
Spurs began the game in poor fashion, and conceded a goal before half time when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/William-Gallas-c36874 failed to clear it properly.
Tottenham then spent the remainder of the half chasing the game, and got their reward when Gallas headed in the equalizer in the second half.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermain-Defoe-c18359 followed that up with a first time effort, and gave the hosts the lead. However, Chelsea proved to be too much for Spurs, and scored three, quick, successive goals, including two from Spanish maestro Juan Mata.
Tottenham had switched off and allowed Chelsea too much space in the centre. Chelsea’s midfield power and quality was a factor Tottenham could not match up to. The game truly leaves the players and manager Andre Villas-Boas with a lot of food for thought.
Jan Vertonghen, who had been immense in the game, was clearly frustrated and disappointed by the home defeat. This marks Tottenham’s first home loss of the season, and Vertonghen insists that the team needs to start playing more consistently.
The Belgian centre- half believes that Tottenham need to maintain more pressure for prolonged periods in a game. Speaking to reporters, he said:
“It’s been almost the same every time; we have to think about how to put two strong halves together. At the start of the second half, we just totally gelled.”
“We pressed their centre-backs, who had been playing much too easily, and had a few good chances. We must talk about how to give more pressure.”
Tottenham had been on a 4-game winning run before Saturday’s London derby, and have only kept one clean sheet at home in the league so far. There are clearly certain issues the manager and the players need to address.
