Tottenham Hotspur’s Belgian centre-half and summer signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 made his Premier League debut against West Brom on Saturday as Spurs went on to draw their first home game of the season.
The defender had his first taste of Premier League action as Spurs took on an impressive West Brom side that had dismantled http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 in the opening week of the Premier League in an astounding 3-0 score line.
Tottenham struggled to score a goal, despite creating many chances. Manager Andre Villas-Boas would have been expecting striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Adebayor-c12526 to open his account on his first game as a permanent Spurs player, but the Togolese forward was unable to find
the back of the net.
Assou-Ekotto scored the opening goal of the game, but West Brom equalized in stoppage time. Tottenham are still looking for their first win of the season as Villas-Boas comes under pressure and fire.
Vertonghen however was pleased with his performance and his first Premier League outing. The defender stated that playing in England is much more difficult than it was back in Holland where the Belgian played for Ajax. He said that this is exactly the reason
why he chose to come to England.
The 25-year old signed for Tottenham in the summer from Dutch champions Ajax, and is considered as one of the best centre-backs in Europe. His arrival surely strengthened the Spurs backline which has long been plagued by injuries and setbacks.
Vertonghen revealed in an interview that the tough and physical nature of the Premier League is main reason for his move to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749.
“I’m glad I made my home debut, “said Vertonghen. “The atmosphere was amazing and the lads helped me through this game – it’s a steady improvement.”
“I did a few good things and a few bad things, but we cannot be happy with the result. I think we had to win that game. We have a very good team and we have been a bit unlucky. I think last week we deserved the draw and this time we deserved the win.”
“It’s a lot harder to win home games here than in Holland, for sure. In Holland we would win this game - not against West Brom but against a different opponent.”
The Belgian looked solid in defence alongside defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/William-Gallas-c36874 and said that he is happy with life in North London and hopes to achieve big things with Tottenham.
