Tottenham unveiled http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 as a Spurs player yesterday as the player’s switch to White Hart Lane was made official. The Belgian defender recently spoke out on his transfer and how it went down.
The Belgian centre-half finally became a Tottenham player yesterday as the club released a statement on their official website announcing his arrival. Vertonghen signed a long-term deal with the North London outfit for £10 million.
The transfer saga had been running hot and cold as the player waited on his future since the summer transfer window opened.
Just a week ago, it seemed that Vertonghen’s move to Tottenham would collapse when he resumed training with his Ajax teammates in Amsterdam.
The player’s contract had a transfer clause which stated that he be paid 15 percent of any transfer fee agreed regarding his sale. Ajax were unwilling to pay this amount and talks between both clubs were at a standstill.
Vertonghen has however finally fulfilled his wish to be a Tottenham player upon completing a medical yesterday, with all formalities relating to the transfer completed and done with.
The 25-year old Belgian defender admitted that he literally had to beg Ajax manager Frank De Boer to allow him to join Tottenham, a team that he strongly believes is capable of winning the English title next season.
Speaking to the English media, Vertonghen said:
"It feels good to be a Tottenham player and be here at this club."

"It was something between me and Ajax that delayed it. It is a long story, but it was over a small amount of money.”

"At the time, I was concerned. But in the end I just told my manager please close the deal."
Vertonghen added that it was Tottenham’s chairman http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Levy who had convinced him to join the club. He explained that he came to visit Tottenham’s stadium and training facilities and was impressed by what he saw. He also praised the club and how far it
has come over the past few years and is hopeful and confident that Tottenham will win silverware next season.
The 25-year old then went on to praise Tottenham’s playing style.
"I was impressed by the way Spurs play their football - it is similar to the way Ajax play - and that was one of the reasons I came here.”
After winning the Eredivisie title with his former club, Vertonghen is eyeing the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, and is very confident that the team will win it. He said:
"It is possible at the moment when I see these players - we have a lot of quality to get to the first positions, so why not? I won the title last season and this year I want to do the same."
