Tottenham Hotspur summer signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 is targeting a central defensive role at the club, despite having played as centre-back in recent games.
The Belgian international has been deployed at left-back ever since he arrived from Dutch outfit Ajax, filling in for the injured Benoit Assou-Ekotto. However, the player recently expressed his desire to play at centre-back.
The 25-year old player rose to prominence at Ajax, where he won two back-to-back Dutch Eredivisie titles. The player is also a genuine leader and was made captain of the side following Maarten Stekelenburg‘s departure to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603.
Vertonghen is a natural ball-playing centre back and is known for his genuine leadership abilities, physical presence and excellent reading of the game. The player is also very effective going forward, as he recently demonstrated in the game against Manchester
United where he made an excellent run from the back and scored his first goal for the club.
The player had been linked with a move to White Hart Lane all summer, and a deal materialized when Ajax and Tottenham agreed on an £8.1 million transfer fee.
Vertonghen was thrust into the first team set-up following Younes Kaboul’s injury, playing his first game as a centre- half. However, in recent fixtures, Vertonghen has been primarily used a left-back.
Speaking to reporters, Vertonghen admitted that his role at left-back will please his national team manager, but admitted that he prefers to play in the heart of the Spurs’ defence.

"The match in Serbia will become one of the hardest, but everyone knows how important this is and is very sharp. We'll go for the three points, but must be sharp in the defence," he added.

"Serbia is starting a new phase where a lot of new players must be integrated. It looks like the situation we were in a few years ago and everyone knows how hard that is. We must take advantage of that."
