Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signing Jan Vertonghen insists that they are strong enough to beat Manchester United as Spurs take on the Reds at Old Trafford this weekend.
Tottenham are currently on a run of two straight domestic wins. After a slow start to their competitive campaign, the club finally managed its first win against Reading at the Madejski Stadium two weeks ago.
Spurs were still without a win at home, and the pressure was on manager Andre Villas-Boas to deliver. The club took on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lazio-c39775 last week on Thursday in the Europa League, but failed to get a win as they saw three goals disallowed.
This was however finally followed by the club’s first home win of the season as they beat Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 in a 2-1 score line. Tottenham had been unconvincing and perhaps a bit fortunate to have sealed all three points, but Villas-Boas was not complaining
as he looked a relieved man after the win.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 was impressive in that game, especially after he was deployed in the left-back position in the second half. The Belgian has found himself a regular starting place the first team following Younes Kaboul’s injury.
The player arrived from Dutch champions Ajax in the summer, and believes that his team can get a result against the former English champions. Vertonghen has beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford with Ajax in last season’s Europa League campaign.
The player insists that Tottenham have the quality to beat United at their own turf, and is confident of it. Tottenham have not managed a victory against The Reds since 2001, but Vertonghen is paying no heed to past results and is eying a win this weekend.
"I played at Old Trafford last year with Ajax and it’s an amazing atmosphere," he told local press and media.
"I'm really looking forward to my first game there with Tottenham. I think we’re strong enough to do nice things there. We've played well away from home and we've got a lot of confidence especially after this first home win."
With http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kyle-Naughton-c21563 also out injured, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto still recovering from his injury, Vertonghen is expected to start the game at left-back. The player insists that he is more than happy to assist his team in whatever way possible.
