Tottenham Hotspur defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 is looking forward to tonight’s clash against Aston Villa, and is aware of the threat posed by compatriot and Villa striker Christian Benteke.
The Belgian centre half said that he never had any doubts that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749.
The Belgian forward first struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League when he moved to Villa Park from Genk in a £7 million move on deadline day. Benteke was only one of three players that Villa manager Paul Lambert signed in a bid to strengthen his
team on the final days of the summer transfer window.
Vertonghen has played alongside Benteke in the Belgian national team, and is aware of the striker’s ability and has cautioned his teammates to be prepared to take on the powerhouse forward. Benteke has scored 8 league goals this season, and is currently
on a hot streak.
This has led to speculation linking the player with a move to White Hart Lane, but manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-c29347 Lambert has played down all sorts of speculation and insisted the player is going nowhere.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas also hailed the Belgian striker and told his players not to take him lightly as they travel to Villa Park tonight.
Vertonghen agreed with his manager’s opinion and said:
“It doesn’t surprise me that he has done well. He is very good in the air and he can score. He will be a very tough player to play against. He now feels the confidence of the team, the crowd and the manager.”
“You could see that in the last two games for the national team (when Benteke scored in wins over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Scotland-c756). He was very good then and I think that Aston Villa made the right choice to sign him.”
Vertonghen may once again be deployed at left-back in the absence of Spurs’ regular left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, but hopes to return to his favoured central defensive position once the injured Cameroonian returns to full fitness.
