Question:

Very Important Beardie Question?

I rescued a my bearded dragon from the animal shelter 2 months ago. He is just about 9 years old. I did a lot of research and I have provided everything that he needs. I took him to the vet right away bc he was extremely thin, and his nails were literally a complete circle and they desperately needed to be clipped. His little fingers were stuck upward after they were clipped and still actually do that a little bit! The vet told me to basically spoil the h**l out of him and feed him fatty meal worms for most of his daily percentage of protein (and basically as much as he can at once.) because he was extremely thin and very weak. Now he is at a heathly weight, and is much better. I am starting to only give him crickets now, but I NEED to know, how often does this adult need to eat? On every website it ONLY tells you how many to feed a baby... but my big man does NOT need 20 crickets a day... Any ideas?

  1. For an adult dragon you should feed them insects only once a day. You don't want to give them too many insects, as they need more greens once they're over a year old. Only give 10-25 large crickets or superworms a day. You still have to use calcium and multi-vitamin supplements. You also still have to offer a large salad of beardie appropriate greens, veggies and fruits EVERY DAY.

    appropriate greens:

    Good Luck!

  2. i do every other day.

and my beardie is pretty happy with that.

  3. Romain Lettace! that is what he needs. and other things of that source, grapes, apples. He might be new to this type of food if he was not cared for properly but he will get the hang of it quick i assume. You should think of crickets and milworms as more of a treat, once or twice a weak or so. =)

  4. I give Jibblet a salad (not iceberg lettuce but other ones, kale, dandeleons, collared greens, cantalope, carrots, tomatoes, he liked peppers too), every other day and crickets and superworms the other days. There are very good food charts available to see what fruits and veggies are good and how often you can feed them. Butter worms and wax worms are great  for adding extra weight as both are high in fat content, just don't give too many. Usually I give 3 or 4  superworms at once and 12-15 crickets once to twice a week. Depending on how many are left in the tank.
