Very Little Sound - heavy bass muffled sound

I connected everything and somethign is very very wrongThere is hardly any soundIt is muffled and heavy on the bass sideClearly something is not working - trying to figur out if it is the cable or the docking stationHow importnt are the docking stations - I think I have a nano 8gb
