Ok, yesterday one of my family members called my mom yesterday and said that he was taking the Beagle to the shelter because he keeps getting sick on the carpet. My mom told him that he didn't want him to go back to the shelter and we said we would take him and keep him and take him to the vet. I don't understand ... They have a Bichon puppy already and they have yet trained this dog. This dog is now 2 months old. I think that they think if they put puppy pads on the floor the puppy will on the pads which is so not true.

I am already supposed to get a puppy ( Mastiff/Rottie mix ) in a couple of weeks, this is really bothering me alot becuase this could've been avoided if they put the time into this dog which is what they don't have. I knew this would happen and it will only be a matter of time before the Bichon is next if they don't get their act together. Then, i'll have to take care of 3 dogs.

And it would really make me angry if they went out and got another dog after they dumped those dogs on me.

But I don't know what to do ? Everytime I think about it, I get more frustrated because I know they don't need a dog in their position. The kids wanted a pit bull or shepherd and I told them they don't need one because they don't even know how to train the 2 dogs they have, muchless get a pit or shepherd. That would be a disaster waiting to happen ...

But what should I do ?

  1. The best you can do is take the dogs off of their hands, report them to animal services, and turn the two other dogs over to a breed rescue center.

Its not your job, nor your responsibility to clean up their messes.

ADD> Well, its not a matter of "can" or "will", its a matter of doing whats right by you. If your family member sees that any s***w up they make will be taken on by you and your mother, you can bet they won't see the error of their ways, and they'll continue to get dogs and neglect to properly train and care for them, and you'll have a whole herd before you know it. If they see that you turn it over to the rescue center and call animal services, there is a chance that they'll think maybe once or twice about the way they raise animals.

  2. I agree and can imagine your frustration because I've experienced the same issue .But unless the animals are in danger, nothing you can do .I started making my boundaries clear and if the person wanted to vent and complain about their "bad dogs" I would say " you choose not to train your dogs, so it is your fault, end of conversation". It is Not your job to take care of their issues and I would not offer my advice or help. Some people never learn and take responsibility so they create their own chaos.

  3. I can understand why you're feeling frustrated and angry!

From their point of view-- they don't even have to feel guilty, they can just justify it as it was a "bad dog" and they didn't even have to take the reponsibility for finding it a new home or feeling the guilt of dumping it at a shelter.

The lack of responsibility of some people is astounding!  But sadly, is all too common.

In order to prevent this happening with the Bichon you can attempt to educate them.  Give them reading materials on training etc.. I've even gone so far as to housetrain and do basic training on a dog myself **IF** I thought they would be a good home once it was accomplished.

Otherwise-- do the training and find the dog a nice home.

Thank you for caring so much!

  4. I'm not sure what you can do.  You can try to talk to them and explain how irresponsible and cruel they are being and try to make them see dogs as a responsibility not a disposable play-thing.  But they don't sound very clever so they might not understand.  I'm not sure if you could report them to anyone as they seem to give the dogs up before they do anything really bad to them.  It is great that you can take the dogs on and look after them but soon you will reach your limit of dogs you can take from them without it being detrimental to the ones you already have.  They will have to go to a no-kill shelter instead.  Sorry there's not alot you can do.
