  1. On your W-4, you claim allowances actually, not dependents.  If you have 3 dependents, yes you can claim them all on your tax return, whether or not you claimed them on your W-4.

If you claim less on your W-4 than you are allowed to, they'll take more out of your paychecks.  You'll get it refunded when you file.

  2. you can claim 1 on your paycheck or however many you want. That figure is used on how much is taken out. The more they take. The more you get back. You can use as many dependants as you have on your income tax return. I have 7 children, so I have mastered those issues.. lol

  3. yeah u have to claim them on ur paycheck too

  4. All I know is that if you suddenly change from one to two dependents on your tax return, the IRS will be pretty interested.

  5. You don't claim dependents on your Form W-4, you claim withholding allowances.  You generally get one or more allowances for each dependent (up to 3 for children under 17 as of the end of the year) as well as one or more for yourself and spouse (if married).  You may also claim additional allowances if you plan on itemizing deductions or if you will be using various tax credits that lower your tax.

The Form W-4 is only to tell your employer how much tax to withhold from your pay.  What you put on your W-4 has no relation to what you file on your tax return.

  6. yeah as long as you have two dependents.  I am married with two kids and claim single and zero on my paycheck.  THey hold out more taxes on the paycheck, but I get more back at the end of the year.
