Very large red wasps..

We have just moved to a new house in Michigan and don't have grass yet. We have very big red wasps, some have a little black on them, living in the dirt in our yard. They are in front of our garage, next to our garage, and next to our front porch. These wasps have been chasing us whenever we walk out our door, and we don't even bother them. We have use many different wasp and bee sprays, one even commercial.

If anyone could please help possibly identify these wasps, or even go as far as telling us how to get rid of them it would be greatly appreciated.

  1. What this poster above me said. Cicada Killers appear to have stingers, but they are fake stingers. They would not even break skin if one were to sting. Cicadas killers are quite harmful believe it or not. You can watch their antics for a long time. What these suckers are doing are getting the last of their food into their nest before summer is over. Most insects go on a last rampage in this manner before winter.

It may seem like their large swarm or chasing is dangerous but it's really not. The venom for these types of wasps have, it takes an incredibly large amount to kill a mouse. Another words, it would be the same for humans.

The sting would feel like an aunt bite and our skin layers are too thick for the stinger to penetrate through our skin.

The key to getting rid of these you can find here:

You want to check out the section that says how to control cicada killers.

    I hope I helped.

  2. Cicada killers. They are very large wasps that can reach almost 2 inches in length and dig holes in the ground and carry cicadas and grasshoppers into their holes. These wasps lay their eggs inside cicadas and grasshoppers where they hatch and eat the victim from the inside out. They can vary a bit in appearance but are usually reddish brown with varying amounts of black and white. They are usually very docile wasps and usually leave people alone but you can get some foaming wasp spray and spray it down their holes. It may or may not help.  They usually move on to another location after a time so if you can wait it out they should move on soon especially since we are moving into the end of summer.

I posted a picture of one and a second link on suggestions on how to control them.

I posted a website called "Whats that Bug" it is a very good website and maybe you can find your wasp on there.  Good Luck!
