I had 6 female bettas in a 10 gallon. I noticed one day that one of them look like it had an extended upper lip. Thought nothing of it. A few days later 4 of them had white on the top lip and bottom and one had some film coming from its mouth. One's eye is even covered/blind now. two have died and two are left. I am keeping them in a clean filtered hospital tank with some betta meds which didnt help. What is the diesase and how do I cure it before they both die as well?!

The other two that were housed in the same tank are fine, and that tank also has a floating breeder with mollie and platy babies in it, and none have died.

  1. it soundls like water quality has caused a fungal infection use melafix to treat and also test the water

  2. It is not a fungal infection, but a bacterial infection called columnaris.  For reasons you can see, it is commonly called mouth rot or mouth fungus.  Start with a water change, remove any activated carbon from the filter, and begin treating with Maracyn TC,  Maracyn 2, Furan 2, Triple Sulfa, Trisulfa, Kanaplex, or any acriflavine based medications.  If using tetracycline or minocycline (in Maracyn TC and Maracyn 2 respectively), turn out the lights for the duration of the treatment, as these both degrade under exposure to light.
