Vesna Dolonts outshines Sorana Cirstea in the second round – Collector Swedish Open 2011
World number 103, Vesna Dolonts of Russia has advanced to the quarterfinal of the Collector Swedish Open 2011 after beating Sorana Cirstea from Romania, 6-3, 6-3.
As she entered the business end of the tournament, the world number 103 appeared visibly more determined and gave her most accomplished display in terms of match statistics.
Dolonts found her service range quickly during a clear-cut first game to lead 1-0. The second game was indicative of the match, in that Cirstea faced a real struggle to hold onto her serve, eventually evening the match after securing five
break points.
The sixth game of the set saw the first break of serve as Cirstea continued to either fail to land her first serve, or her serves were easily dealt with and returned with interest by the Russian. Dolonts earned five break points
on Cirstea’s serve, the last of which she converted with a powerful forehand winner down the line to lead 3-1.
The following games then went with serve until the ninth game, which saw Dolonts achieve the decisive break of the opening set. Cirstea contributed to her downfall, with a couple of unforced errors, which handed the opening set
to Dolonts 6-3.
The final set kicked off in the same vein as the first one had finished with Dolonts not troubled in the least on her service game and soon racing into a 1-0 lead.
Games then went with serve, but not without alarm for Cirstea who had to fight hard to save two break points in the second set. At 2-1 to Dolonts, Cirstea’s serve again came under pressure. She saved two break points but it was
third time lucky for the world number 103 as she made it 3-2 with a fierce forehand.
Dolonts by now had the winning position in sight and was in a clearly authoritative mood. She won all remaining games, ending the match fittingly with a forehand winner to match the first set scoreline of 6-3.
A telling statistic of the match was that Dolonts saved three break points during the whole match. Furthermore, she won 51 percent of points on her service, 62 percent of points on return and 57 percent of points in total.
With this win, the 21-year-old Dolonts has improved her year-to-date win/loss mark to 20/13 matches and now moves on into the quarterfinals of the tournament where she will meet eighth-seeded Polona Hercog of Slovenia.
