Question:

Vet gives cat cerenia?

We took our Cat to the vet because she was throwing up a lot. The vet gave her an injectable of Cerenia and some expensive X-rays. Results? Cat is "fine".

Several hours later, the cat is at home, and begins to meow violently. Once we address the cat too see whats wrong she becomes lethargic and is drooling a lot. She then starts to get "spaced out" she doesn't look at anything, she doesn't react to us moving around her she just lays there.

We take her back to the vet, same thing happens. Vet gives her Cerenia, takes more X-rays. A few hours goes by and she seems okay, sends her home.

Cat is home for a while, meows. Drools, Lethargic, Scared. Oh did I mention she hasn't eaten anything for the 2 days since she got her first dose of Cerenia?

So the vet's advice is give her more Cerenia (half a pill once a day for 2 more days).

Any second opinions?

  1. Our cat started vomiting, wouldn't eat, would't move.  He was diagnosed w/ pancreatitis, given Cerenia, and a feeding tube was inserted.  He's been home a couple of days.  No vomiting, gaining strength each day.

  2. I have a 16-year old cat who has had IBD for many years.  This isn't something any pet owner dealing with IBD wants to hear.....cases differ with each cat.  There is no cure for it.  This disease takes a lot of trial and error with foods, supplements, medications and treatments.  I do agree with the person who said that the Cerenia injection should not have been repeated if the result was not good the first time.  There is a good site on the web....I think it is called IBD Kitties.  There are testimonials from people dealing with IBD and you can see how different each case is.  With the GI distress involved, you don't want to repeat a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g that only makes your kitty sicker.  My best advice....if your primary vet cannot get the sickness to ease, ask for a referral to a good internist.  It may or may not help, but you will be able to know you did everything you could.

  3. This could be something called IBD, it is very common in cats and my 5 year old just has been diagnosed. I spent a grand total of almost 6k between diagnostics, hospitalization when the cat was not eating/dehydrated. The only way to properly diagnose IBD is with a biopsy. My vet recommended we not do this and just begin treating. Steriod shots have stopped the vomiting. Its been a long month and my cat has lost a good deal of weight but at least I feel I am headed in the right direction. I know its frustrating, the cat is sick and you spend a fortune only to be told that cat's throw up for any number of reasons. Good luck. I know it will turn out well b/c you are smart and doing your own research. Sometimes you have to point the doctor in the right direction too.

  4. Since my cat was put on oral cerenia he has stopped vomiting, however one day after starting cerenia he stopped eating completely. It is to much of a coincidence that he stopped eating so soon after starting cerenia. I'm not a vet, however, I strongly suspect that the cerenia has something to do with the fact that he has stopped eating, especially since he has always been a great eater prior to being put on the cerenia.
