Veteran Boston Bruins Centre Marc Savard declared unfit to play next season –NHL offseason Update
Unfortunately, speculations which arose before the previous regular season ended about Boston Bruins veteran centre player, Marc Savard, not being able to play next season due to reoccurring concussion symptoms and problems were confirmed on Wednesday, August
31, as team general manager, Peter Chiarelli, announced the distressing news.
"Marc Savard won't play this year", Chiarelli said about the players’ health. "Nothing has changed in our monitoring. He'll be examined and he'll be declared unfit to play".
Something which certainly has saddened not only players but fans all around the world is that there are further rumours that Savard’s career might altogether be near a close or already is in the process of finishing up.
It was due to a hit during the 2009-2010 season that caused Savard to end it much shorter than expected, playing only 41 games coming out of full 82 game season. Savard still managed to score an impressive 33 points (10 goals, 23 assists) during those short
lived moments and played 25 more matchups last season, but managed to put up only 10 points (2 goals, 8 assists) after facing another hit in January while playing against Colorado Avalanche.
No matter how bad the situation, there can always be a miracle.
"Based on what I see, what I hear, what I read, and what I'm told, it's very unlikely Marc will play again", Chiarelli said. "Now, knowing the uncertainty of this injury, there's always a chance [he could play]. But based on what I'm told, it's very unlikely
he'll play. As an employer, I support him and hope he gets back to living a healthy life".
The Ottawa, Ontario, Canada native was selected as the 91st overall draft pick during round-four of the National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by New York Rangers and played only two seasons with his original selection team.
The former two-time All-Star player has played 13 professional seasons with various teams like Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers and finally, Boston Bruins.
Not knowing the certainty of the situation, it is still much too early to announce any final decision on whether the player will retire or not. Next season will be a healing one for Marc Savard and ultimately, a decider.
