Veteran Carolina Hurricanes player Cory Stillman to join Florida Panthers after retirement -NHL Update
Making it known to the world that he still loves the sport of ice hockey even after having played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), Cory Stillman is still going to be announcing his retirement on Thursday.
Proving his love for the game, Stillman added that he would not be leaving it completely after his announcement was made, but would be joining Florida Panthers' front office, still contributing to the game but just not on the ice.
Turning 38 in December, Stillman thinks that this is the best time to end his career as he is still fresh and healthy.
"I can walk away knowing I wasn't pushed out the door", Stillman said. "I could play. When I got traded back to Carolina, I was reunited with some guys and we had a good run at the end. In the end, I'm not old, but I'm getting a little older, I'll be 38
in December, and I had a career I'm very happy with".
Stillman was picked up by Calgary Flames during round-one of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by Calgary Flames as their sixth overall pick. He played in seven seasons with his original draft team along with Team Canada during the World Championships in 1999.
He joined St. Louis Blues after the 1999-2000 season concluded and spent three seasons with the Eastern Conference franchise. Stillman spent a single season with Tampa Bay Lightning the following year and went on board with Carolina Hurricanes. Ottawa Senators
grabbed him during 2008 but only to lose him to Florida Panthers in 2008.
The Peterborough, Ontario, Canada native, rejoined Carolina last season to participate in 21 games but later on decided that it would be his last. Retiring from the game, according to him, is a way to continue doing what he loves to do.
"I love playing the game and still love the game a lot, but one door is closing and another door is opening", Stillman said. "This allows me to stay in the game and be a part of an NHL team and help kids. I can walk away with no regrets in this game".
