Veteran Centre Todd Marchant retires from playing, joins Anaheim Ducks' Management –NHL Update
Veteran centre player of Anaheim Ducks, Todd Marchant, announced his retirement from playing in the National Hockey League (NHL), but has not left it in spirit since he immediately joined the franchise's management as its Director of Players Development.
Drafted as the 164th overall pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft during round-four by New York Rangers, a team which he only played for one game, moved on to Edmonton Oilers, Columbus Blue Jackets and played his final six seasons with Anaheim Ducks
for a total of 17 seasons in the NHL.
Marchant was known as a shorthanded specialist throughout his career and remained a very consistent player.
The 37-year-old knew it was time to quit when he managed to only score eight points in 79 games during the previous regular season and a single point during Anaheim’s six-game playoff run.
"I want to thank the Rangers, Oilers, Blue Jackets and Ducks organizations, my teammates, the fans, and most importantly, my family, for their great support over the years", Marchant said. "I've had an unbelievable experience playing in the National Hockey
League, and it's simply time to move on. I'm excited to stay with the Ducks organization in my new role and look forward to my post-playing career. Staying with the Ducks will provide my family the opportunity to continue living in a great community, one in
which we plan to remain actively involved".
Marchant played 1,195 NHL games in all and ended his colourful career with 498 points, 186 goals and 312 assists.
He led Anaheim to a Stanley Cup in 2007 as Ducks overpowered Ottawa Senators in the finals.
Having such a veteran player in Anaheim’s management, the team can certainly hope to do much better in the future seasons.
Ducks' executive vice president and general manager, Bob Murray, also praised Marchant for his contributions to the California based franchise and hoped that he will serve the team in a managerial position like he did as a top-level player.
It may have come as a shock for many fans, but the people who knew Marchant, believe it was for the best.
