Veteran Forward Mike Comrie looking to rest hip before comeback decision –NHL offseason Update
After going out early last season due to a hip related injury sustained in the second game of the 2010-2011 regular season, Mike Comrie is still unsure of his return to the National Hockey League (NHL) and terms his current situation as undergoing rehab
for it to fully heal.
Mike Comrie, a 30-year-old centre player from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has 10 NHL regular seasons under his belt, making him a well known regular veteran in the league.
After playing for the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), Comrie was picked up by Edmonton Oilers as the 91st overall pick during round-three of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
He played three straight seasons with Edmonton Oilers from 2000-2003 until moving on to Philadelphia Flyers for a single season, following a transition to Phoenix Coyotes for the next three then Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and finally Pittsburgh
Penguins.
Comrie tried to make a comeback with Edmonton during the 2009-2010 season by signing a one-year contract, but failed to impress and was released as a free agent.
Pittsburgh signed the 5-foot-10, 185-pound player last season for a reported $500,000 and played out of his position as a winger. He made a comeback for a single game late in March, but went out and failed to show-up in the playoffs.
“In wanting to return to play after surgery, I pushed myself too early and that has not helped my recovery”, Comrie said in a statement released through the National Hockey League (NHL) Players Association. “I will return to the NHL when I am healthy and
able to play at the level I have come to expect of myself”.
Mike Comrie in all has played 589 NHL games in which he has scored 365 points (168 goals, 197 assists) along with an accumulated plus-minus rating of -49.
It is still uncertain whether Comrie will be able to return to the major league next season seeing that he is now sitting as a unrestricted free agent which would allow him to sign with a team, but it might not be with Pittsburgh this time around.
