Veteran Luis Castillo dropped by the New York Mets – MLB Update
Things had to end one day or the other and the circumstances could not have been any different as veteran Luis Castillo was put out of the New York Mets organization after failing to impress the officials in the team during Spring Training in Florida. The
decision came from General Manager Sandy Alderson, who made the call as baseball manager.
Castillo is harshly remembered for his dropped pop up catch during the 2009 Subway Series in the Bronx Stadium. The player is having a tough time in the field and the decision had to be made in reference to the playing record from the 2010 Major League Baseball
season and the spring training camp performances.
"I don't think there's any question that there was some linkage between his situation and a perception of the Mets that has existed to this point," Alderson said. "That's something that was taken into account. At some point, you have to make an organizational
decision, and it goes beyond just an ability to play or not play. Those things are relevant."
The Mets will be with four players who will compete for the starting second-base position. Luis Hernandez, Justin Turner, Brad Emaus and Daniel Murphy will be in a tight competition for the spot and there is no telling where the position may fall.
Castillo did not hang around spring camp for long, when the decision of dropping him from the team reached him. He immediately left without addressing the press that was lying in wait for his word. He did however tell the reporters that he would look for
another club that was interested in his services.
"I'm not sure there's anything he could have done differently," Alderson said. "Everybody has to go out and play. Certainly, controlling the effort is one thing. Controlling the outcome is another. I think he made the effort."
Castillo has a career hitting average of .290 and he has 370 stolen bases to his name. He’s a three time National League All-Star player and has won the Golden Glove three-times in his career.
