Veteran Steve Davis crashes out of 2012 Welsh Open: Snooker news
Second round matches of 2012 Welsh Open snooker tournament have come to an end and top eight potters from around the world have advanced into the quarters. Legendary potter, England’s
Steve Davis has crashed out of the tournament at the hands of compatriot Shaun Murphy, who ousted him quite easily by the score line of 4-0 in their second round clash at the Newport Centre arena in Newport.
The Round 2 clash between Davis and Murphy seemed a piece of cake for the Magician, Murphy, who did not spend much time on the table and easily managed to whitewash the former six-time
World Snooker Champion. Despite having a chance to capitalise back in the game, Davis was not able to unsettle his opponent and tumbled down easily by 4-0.
Murphy, on the other hand, sparked his cue on the baize quite well and pushed the legend to a whitewash defeat after firing some excellent knocks of 36, 59, 58 along with some useful small
breaks to grab a 3-0 lead in the match. Murphy was going strong in the fourth frame but unfortunately he snookered himself and allowed Davis a chance to get back into the game. Davis failed to take advantage of that opportunity and lost the frame.
While speaking to World Snooker after winning the match, Murphy said, “I'm relieved because you always get a tough match against Steve. He was my idol growing up and he played well against
Ali Carter the other day. I wasn't as clinical as I would have liked to be, but at least I'm in the quarter-finals. I'm only in second or third gear at the moment and hopefully I've got a couple more.”
The 2012 Master snooker event finalist, Murphy will next meet the 2011 UK Championship finalist, Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen in the quarter-final encounter at the Newport Centre arena
in Newport, Wales. Both players have played against each other four times before and in all those four games, Murphy was victorious.
The odds are favouring Murphy according to the previous record. The quarter-final encounter will be televised live on Eurosport on Friday, February 17.
