Veterans terming Fans as Biggest Losers in Lockout Fiasco -NHL Update
Following the entire lockout, the league veterans who are not playing but are still keeping up, are terming the fans as the ones getting “shafted” and it seems that it is hard for anyone to deny their statement.
“They never consider the fans,” said 93-year-old Wally Stanowski, the oldest living Maple Leaf, during a veterans’ luncheon at a Markham diner, according to the Toronto Sun. “If they all decreased salaries, seats would be cheaper. So think of the fans once
in awhile.”
For the retired players, it is hard to see how the league has been handling financial issues related to the players and continue to increase in terms of greed. Fans who have dedicated their time and money for the league should not be treated in such a manner,
according to a group of veteran, and paying them back this way just could not have been any worse.
For Stanowski, it is the players who are acting too caught up in the money and are already making a lot of money. They should be ready to compromise, but that statement just might not be what everyone considers to be the reality.
“As far as I can tell, it’s the players who have to give. They’re overpaid, as most athletes in every sport are today. It’s money, money, money. Take Alex Rodriguez of the Yanks. He makes much more than the president of the United States. No one is worth
that kind of money.”
There are many factors that have led to the league and labour union being deadlocked for so long as the league considers the players to be making much more than their worth. Wanting to cut their share in team revenues and limit the amount of powers they
have in relation to team affairs is something the league is wanting to take care of and could be done if the players side collapses. Fans have suffered to a great extent already with cancellations of the preseason, regular season and the Winter Classic between
the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings being the latest of the three.
