Veterinary Experiences?

Hi I am about to choose my college major (for a second time) and I don't want it to end up like the first one which I experienced it first hand and did not like. I am looking for a volunteering opportunity in a veterinary clinic so I know kind of what to expect. For those who have worked in a veterinary clinic/veterinary related work, what are the pros and cons of working in a veterinary clinic, or any veterinary related jobs? Thank you for your time!!

Also, vet graduate students, what is the pros and cons of vet school?

  1. Pros:

You get to work with animals up close.

You learn a lot and there are many different animal clinics to get involved with like small animals(cats and dogs), exotics(rodents and ferrets and stuff), etc...

    Cons:

A lot of sad stuff, like not being able to save an animal.

    A lot of animal clean-up.

Some mean animals sometimes, and you will have to hold them while someone gives them shots.

  2. Working in a Vet's office can be very rewarding and sad at the same time. You see typical patients, but you also get those that tear at your heart strings. It is a fantastic experience to volunteer at a vet clinic or at your local animal charity center where the vet's volunteer their time as well. I work for a farm vet and have gained valuable experiences, but personally, I am finishing my master's degree in English education. It takes someone with a love for animals but more importantly, someone who understands what they are saying. Animals are hard patients because they can't speak or say what is wrong. YOU have to decipher their language and apply your knowledge of medicine to treat them. You have to make decisions that you don't want to make....for example: a couple comes in to the office with a one year old puppy and wants YOU to it put to sleep because it is too hyper.... what do you do? There are no health issues, nothing, but hyperactivity that is completely normal for a puppy. Not a good situation to be in. It happens a lot with your clients, not everyone who owns animals is an animal lover.

Volunteer anyway and make sure this is the path you want to go. The school is a long process and huge investment, but the payoff is helping the most grateful creatures on the planet.

By the way.... that puppy is sitting at my feet while I type this. :)
