Veterinary courses?

I'm stuck as to whether to become an equine vet nurse or a small animal vet nurse. Is one more challenging than the other? Also does anyone know of any good vet nurse courses available in the UK at any university, equine or otherwise?

  1. I think the only difference is working with BIG or SMALL animals. I dont know about universities in UK (I live in the US) but most require a 2 year program to become one of those nurses.

  2. I have thought about this and there is more money in small animal and much more variety. Even though i love horses and would love to work with them I am going to go for small animal as i think i would get bored with just horses. I guess small animal is more challenging as you have to learn about lots of animals not just horses. There are also more small animal practices around so you are more likely to get a job in a small animal practice. As for courses, usually you get a job at a vets and do day release college one afternoon every week for 2 years before you become qualified. The only university that i know that does a vet nurse course is Nottingham Trent uni which does a foundation degree in veterinary nursing. Hope this helps and good luck!!

  3. I don't know what it's like in the UK, but around here (midwest US) there are too many small animal vets, and too few equine vets, so that might be something to look into before you decide.  Some vets I know can barely make ends meet, which is a direct result of the overabundance.  However, the equine vets aren't necessarily getting rich either, and many won't hire vet nurses (techs)...they prefer to train their own people and pay them less....so, make sure you research the job availability first.
