VfL Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath expels Patrick Helmes from first team - Bundesliga News
Having failed to cement his place in the starting XI, VfL Wolfsburg striker, Patrick Helmes, has been expelled by Felix Magath for an indefinite period. Despite scoring two goals this season, Helmes will have to play with junior teams before returning to
the first team.
Helmes was recently criticised by the club manager for his poor defensive work. Magath opined that any player, whether a striker, midfielder or a defender, should know all traits of the game before chancing his legs on the pitch.
Patrick’s woeful defensive technique caused bitterness between the player and his manager. In spite of being constantly told by Felix to work on his defensive skills, the striker didn’t take his boss’ word seriously and has suffered as a consiquence.
The former Koln striker landed at Volkswagen Arena this year in order to improve his Germany chances. However, the player has been forced to go through hard times, which will certainly hamper his international opportunities.
Magath told that Helmes is a decent striker but modern day football demands something more. He believes that the attacker would definitely learn from his punishment and soon regain his spot in the starting XI.
While talking to reporters on the striker’s expulsion, the former Schalke boss further stated:
"I have decided to release him for the amateur team. His strong points are scoring and converting his chances. These are not the qualities that we have to push to the forefront right now.”
He also added, "He has not learned to do defensive work. At this moment he can be of no help to us."
Helmes, on the other hand, showed disappointment at his manager’s stance and vowed to bounce back quickly from the embarrassing situation.
He reckoned that Magath shouldn’t have treated him this way as his main job is to score goals for the club, which he has already done twice this term from just three league appearances.
