Magath was all praise for his side on putting up a special show and that too away from home. He was ecstatic with the fact that Die Wolfe were able to get back on winning ways after suffering a shock defeat to the minnows, RB Leipzig, in the first round
of DFB Pokal encounter.
He told that his side were outstanding during the first hour of the game and never let the hosts to settle down. The manager urged his side to continue with the same form in the future games and try repeat the feat of the 2008/09 season when Die Wolfe clinched
the title.
In an interview to a local channel, Magath added, "I am pleased that we played such a good game. We were on the ball today and we controlled the game very well, at least in the first hour. Then Koln also had chances but we came back into the game once Milivoje
Novakovic went off.
“When you have put together a new-look team, it is always difficult to begin at home. Therefore, I was glad that we were able to begin with an away game. We played very well for an hour. Unfortunately we could not score more but all in all it was a deserved
win." He concluded.
Helmes helped the visitors to an early advantage in the 17th minute. Schafer doubled the lead in the 85th minute right after Koln striker Novakovic was sent off. Helmes then made it 3-0 five minutes later to complete a resounding victory
over the Billy Goats.
Magath also reserved praise for his defence who were steady throughout and never allowed the home side to have any notable impact on the Wolfsburg goal.
Koln manager, Stale Solbakken, on the other hand, seemed unperturbed with the home loss and vowed to make a strong comeback in their next game. He reckoned that Helmes was terrific through the 90 minutes and probably was the difference between his side and
Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg will host Bayern Munich in their next game on Saturday, August 13, while Koln will travel away to take on Schalke on the same day.
