VfL Wolfsburg’s Marcel Schafer deprived of captaincy ahead of the new campaign – Bundesliga news
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VfL-Wolfsburg-c40881 manager, Felix Magath, has stripped left back Marcel Schafer from the club captaincy following his team’s 3-2 defeat to a fourth division side Leipzig in a DFB Pokal first round game. The club’s defence was highly criticised by the fans and
the higher authorities which led to the downfall of Schafer. Magath, though, hasn’t yet decided about the new skipper as Wolfsburg prepare for their opening game of the 2011/12 campaign against FC Koln on Saturday, August 6.
The news came as a surprise for both the player and the fans who weren’t expecting a harsh treatment like this. Schafer, at the end of the game against Leipzig, accepted the mistakes committed by him and his defence members and promised not to repeat them
during the rest of the season.
He also apologised to the fans and urged his teammates to put their heads down and claim for a top half finish at least this season. The Player told that he never had any idea of such a stance taken by the Manager but vowed to give his hundred percent despite
being considered unfit to lead his side.
Die Wolfe were leading 2-0 against Leipzig at half time and took the matter lightly, which led to their exit from the German Cup. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Frahn scored a hat-trick for the underdogs and took his side singlehandedly into the next round. Magath admitted the
fact that his side took it extremely easy and lost an opportunity of progressing through to the next stage.
In an interview to a local news channel, the Manager added, "He did very well last season, otherwise we would not have stayed in the league, but after the performance in the Cup I see myself forced to make changes within the team."
