Via Rail is just so expensive!?

Why is Via Rail so expensive? Can I get deals on Comfort class and Sleeper class? What deals can I get? What can I do to make train travel cheaper?

You can save 40% with "supersaver" fare on Confort Class on many VIA trains. The basic conditions are:

1) You reserve over 5 days in advance

2) There are still such "seats" available on that train

3) On some runs, you departure must NOT be on Friday.

Two years ago, we took VIA Rail from Toronto to Vancouver. We had a double-sleeper (two bedrooms assembled as one). I thought that the price was reasonable considering all that is included. The car attendants were very helpful and always available when needed. The meals were great and the scenery was spectacular.

Keep in mind, that a long train trip (overnight or longer) should be treated as a cruise. If you are using the train as pure transportation, you'd be better off flying. As far as getting deals, I think that the prices go up just after Memorial Day, which marks the start of their busy season. You can probably get the best deals during the Winter months.
