Vic Darchinyan takes on Shinsuke Yamanaka to grasp his WBC bantamweight gold – Boxing News
Vic Darchinyan, the former WBC and IBF super flyweight champion, has decided to start his reign over the bantamweight division and take on Shinsuke Yamanaka, the current WBC bantamweight champion, for his gold so as to become a three-division world champion,
in a 12-round bout on April 6, 2012
The ring for the epic clash will be stretched at Tokyo International Forum situated in Tokyo, Japan and the event will be promoted by Akihiko Honda of Teiken Promotions. The above bout will co-headline the Friday night show whereas the WBC super featherweight
title bout between Takahiro Ao and Terdsak Kokietgym will headline the event.
Vic, 36, has undoubtedly the odds in his favour since he has a huge experience in his gear as compared to Yamanaka’s 17-bout one. The Armenian Vic has been in a total 42 bouts and emerged victorious in 37. He obliterated 27 of his opponents to collect a
knockout win.
In addition, Vic, infamous as the ‘Raging Bull’, has ruled two divisions emphatically and has won almost all the available titles in the flyweight and super flyweight division. His Friday night opponent, Shinsuke Yamanaka, though has an undefeated win streak
yet he has just been in a total 17 bouts and is in a serious defensive position.
Moreover, this will be the 29-year-old Yamanaka’s first title defence. The aspects that might help him during the bout will be his height and knockout ability. Yamanaka has collected 11 of his total 15 wins by knockout and is interestingly on a nine-bout
knockout win streak.
In addition to the above advantages, Yamanaka will also have his home crowd backing him up during the skirmish, an aspect that might confuse or demoralise the veteran Vic. Otherwise, a glance at the duo’s stats clearly shows that Vic has an upper hand over
the southpaw Yamanaka.
Vic, at his arrival in Japan, shared his sparring and preparation details and said, “The training is done and I’m ready to dethrone Yamanaka. It was an exhausting training camp, but I paid the price and I’m in excellent shape. Getting a victory in Japan
will be a difficult task, except my determination to bring home another world title is driving me like never before. I’m confident that I’ll be crowned world champion once again.”
If Yamanaka wins by defying all odds, this will be his career’s greatest achievement. Vic lost his last bout and his IBO bantamweight gold to Anselmo Moreno whereas Yamanaka is on a continue win streak.
