Vicente Del Bosque has stated that it is easier to manage the national team as compared to a top level club. The Spanish national team coach enjoyed success on both club and national level.
Del Bosque was presiding over the International Coaches Conference at La Coruna as he gave his views on managing a talented club team and the national squad. He gave the final lecture to the assembled crowd that had four congressmen in attendance.
Reviewing his work as La Roja chieftain which saw him lifting the 2010 World Cup trophy, the Salamanca born manager gave his views on the subject of managing the national team as compared to a club side.
Del Bosque remarked that it is easier to manage the national team as there is less conflict and everyone is willing to go the extra mile for the country.
However, he did state that within the club player have more contact with each other and develop special bonding, which takes a longer time to achieve on the international stage.
Commenting on the matter, he stated that they have to be attentive to what is said, both verbal and non-verbal communication, and cannot discount anything.
Del Bosque reflected that despite the difficulty in incorporating players into different tactical strategies, it is still an easier task than in club competitions.
He said that players have to be continually monitored for their own effort, which is difficult to enforce in the national setup. Breaking the habits of players is a difficult process, which national team managers have to live with.
"Before it seemed like a coach knew everything but it is not true. I wanted to influence even the bread that a player had to consume and not just that. You have to delegate," he said.
The 60-year old stated that he believes in trying to find the balance between the tactical and technical side of managing a competitive team, as it is important for group effort.
He also gave his views on the attributes of a perfect coach: “an ideal coach should be exemplary, morally upright, and earn respect every day because there are too many examples of authoritarian coaches failing."
