Victor Cabedo wins fourth stage of Vuelta Asturias Julio Alvarez Mendo – Cycling news
Victor Cabedo won the fourth stage of the 55th Vuelta Asturias Julio Alvarez Mendo on Sunday.
The 21-year-old rider Cabedo took his first-ever professional victory. The race started in Cafes Toscaf and ended at Oviedo.
Victor Cabedo covered the distance of 181 kilometres in 4 hours, 38 minutes and 23 seconds. The Australian rider Rory Sutherland of United Healthcare Pro Cycling team was in second place with a difference of 11 seconds.
Jose Ivan Gutierrez Palacios of Movistar Team finished third 38 seconds behind Cabedo. Ruben Perez Moreno came fourth while Rafael Infantino Abreu finished in fifth place.
Meanwhile Sergey Shilov, Sergio Miguel and Lemos Pinto were in sixth, seventh and eighth places respectively.
The first break came just after nine kilometres after a group of nine riders attacked early in the race including Jose Ivan, Francisco Iriarte, Ruben Perez, David Belda, Antonio Piedra, Victor Cabedo, Rafael Infantino, Antonio Amori and Rory Sutherland.
The group of nine riders were controlled by Moreno of Caja Rural team and all of them were never allowed to manage a gap of over four minutes. The Caja Rural team tried hard to bring the break back in the closing moments but their efforts were not enough.
Recently, Cabedo came fourth in the mountains competition at Ruta del Sol and also grabbed fifth place at the Klasika Primavera.
In the final sprint of the race, Cabedo made the right move with Rory Sutherland of the United Healthcare team. The entire team showed some good effort and with the help of his teammate, Cabedo crossed the finish line ahead of the other riders.
Javier Moreno of the Caja Rural team retained his position and took the overall leader jersey with the timing of 17 hours, 2 minutes and 23 seconds.
Constantino Zaballa Gutierrez was the runner-up with a difference of 13 seconds behind Moreno. Sergio Ferreira Sousa was in third spot and trailed by 36 seconds.
All the riders will now move towards the final stage between Tartiere Auto and Alto del Narancoiere. It will be interesting to see who wins the last stage of the race.
