Victor Crivoi, Leonardo Mayer advance in qualies – Mercedes Cup 2011
The qualifying singles match between Romanian Victor Crivoi and German Florian Fallert, effectively meant an end of the 2011 Mercedes Cup tournament for Fallert. Crivoi managed to convincingly overpower Fallert in the match with
a 2-0 win.  Fallert initially tried to defend his game, with the first set ending at 7-5 but in the second set he completely succumbed to the much better display of skills by Victor and lost the second set at 6-3.
Previously in the tournament, both the players had begun by winning their respective opening matches. The fourth seeded player in the tournament, Crivoi won against the unseeded German Marcel Zimmermann with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 score.
Fallert, a wild card entrant into the competition made his way to the next round by taking a two set lead against Dutch Remko De Rijke, scoring a 6-3, 6-4 win.
In their opening set, both Fallert and Crivoi bagged one ace each. With Fallert inching closer to him, Crivoi managed to improve his serves. Crivoi won 17 of the 21 points on his service. In contrast, Fallert lacked in the service
department and in the end it was this that cost him the game. He won 11 of the only 15 points on his service. The first set ended at the 7-5 mark, with Victor taking the lead. Fallert opened the second set in a dominating position but eventually fell 3-6 to
Victor. With this win, Crivoi took a 1-0 lead in head-to-head score against Fallert.
In the other match of the day, qualifying 5th seed Leonardo Mayer from Argentina won against the unseeded Czech Lukas Dlouhy. With his 2-1 victory Mayer showed Lukas the door, while Mayer himself moves on to the final
qualifying round.
The first set ended at 6-4 with Mayer in the lead in the set score. The five double faults made in the set meant that Lukas could never recover from the debacle. Moreover, Mayer showed impressive skill especially while serving
and struck four aces against Dlouhy’s one. Dlouhy made an attempt at a comeback in the second set and won 6-4. This was in part due to Dlouhy’s ability to successfully convert breakpoints; he managed to effectively win his two breakpoints. Also, Dlouhy won
11 of the only 15 points on his service in this set. However, Mayer fully recovered in the next set and won 6-4 again, winning himself the match.
The 4th and 5th seeded victors from these two matches, Crivoi and Mayer are all set to appear against each other in the final qualifying round for a spot in the main draw of the event.
