Victor Crivoi moves past Leonardo Mayer into the main draw – Mercedes Cup 2011
The 2011 Mercedes Cup final qualifier round played at the TC Weissenhof Court, Stuttgart, Germany wrapped up on Monday, 11th July 2011. Playing each other for the first time this season, Victor Crivoi from Romania met
and defeated the former world No. 51 Leonardo Mayer from Argentina for a spot in the main draw.
Serving first, Crivoi took away the opening game of the first set without giving away a point. Serving second, Leonardo won the second game, 40-30, and made it 1-1.  The argentine dominated throughout the set winning the next two
games as well. Leading the score 3-1, the Romanian succeeded to pull away one last game for himself of the set. There after the 24 year old dominated and won the next three games and took away the set 6-2.
Frustrated from the first set, the Romanian made a comeback in the second set. Serving for the first game of the set, Crivoi won on his serve to start off with a 1-0 lead in the second set. The Argentine did level the scores on
his serve making it 1-1 after the first game, but it was after then when the Romanian unleashed his rage on his rival. Winning all 5 games including two break points, the Romanian took away the second set 6-1 to level the score to 1-1.
Looking at the severe beating the two players gave each other in the first two sets; it was the 3rd set that made it look like a cat fight. Leonardo went off to a flyer as he won the first three sets. Leading 3-0 in
the 3rd set, the Argentine’s overconfidence made a disastrous change in the match. As Crivoi won the 4thgame of the set, Leonardo won the next and the last of the match. With scores at 2-5 after Leonardo’s serve, the Romanian gave the
over confident Argentine a lesson to be learned. Crivoi won the next 5 games, set and the match making his win historic. The Argentine lost his temper and the match 6-2, 1-6, 5-7.
Born on May 25, 1982, the 29 year old Romanian is a strong right handed player. Currently ranked as the world No.195, Victor had his best rankings at World No.75 in August 2009. Having played a total of 494 matches, the Romanian
is also a strong clay court player with powerful backhands and net plays.
He now moves on ahead to play Spaniard Pablo Andujar in the first round of the main draw.
