Victor Estrella, Facundo Bagnis move into quarterfinal round – Medellin Challenger 2011
Dominican Victor Estrella cruised past local Juan Sebastian Cabal into the final eight of the 2011 Seguros Bolivar Open in Medellin, Colombia on Thursday, 3rd November. Estrella required only an hour and seventeen minutes
to secure a 6-2, 6-4 win over the higher ranked local.
Meeting each other for the fourth time, Estrella moved into a three match to one lead against Cabal after his victory in the second round of the Medellin Challenger on Thursday. It seemed the local support did not factor much into
the outcome of the match.
Winning the toss, the local opened serve. However, Cabal was broken in the very first game by the Dominican who moved into a 2-0 lead after a successful hold of serve. Estrella hit a snag in the fourth game as the local pushed
to six deuces. However, saving the breakpoints faced, the Dominican was able to maintain his lead at 3-1. The pair won one game each on their serve next. Capitalising on another breakpoint opportunity in the seventh game, Estrella served out the set at 5-2
to secure a 6-2 win in the opener.
Despite hitting five double faults, Estrella was able to go one up in the set score with four aces and a 79 percent win on first serve saving five of five breakpoints and clinching a total of 34 of 60 points.
Maintaining his form in the second set, Estrella continued his onslaught against the local. The pair started off with a series of breakpoints from the two players with two for Estrella and one for Cabal. Estrella led the score
3-1. From there on now the two players continued to win on their respective serves. Eventually the Dominican served out the set at 5-4 riding the single breakpoint opportunity.
A 6-4 win in the second set sealed the straight sets win for Estrella and also a berth in the final eight of the event. Estrella moves into the quarterfinal of the event to play the second seeded Frenchman Eric Prodon.
Also moving ahead in the day was Argentine Facundo Bagnis. Bouncing back from a set down, Bagnis secured a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over local Carlos Salamanca in one hour and twenty five minutes. Surviving nine aces from his opponent
and throwing his own six in the mix, Bagnis hit an amazing 80 percent on his first serve as he converted a total of four of six breakpoints to his advantage to ensure his survival at the event.
