Victor Hanescu slays Jose Checa-Calvo to reach round two – Banja Luka 2012 CH
Third seed, Victor Hanescu, crushed the Spanish challenger, Jose Checa-Calvo, with a breadstick at the Banja Luka Challenger 2012 on Tuesday. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 success against the world number 294 to charge into the second round at this outdoor clay
court event taking place from 8th to 16th September in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Hanescu pocketed the last six games consecutively to carve out the victory in straight sets. He needed one hour and seven minutes to steal the show and advance into the round of 16 at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The seeded Romanian brought his experience into handy and smoothly plucked his opening serve to take the initial lead. He continued hitting angled shots and after dusting away all three breakpoints he came across, Hanescu kept his entire serves. The Romanian
got the breakthrough in the sixth game and consequently clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 97th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Hanescu unleashed his true form in the proceeding set. After Checa-Calvo held his opening serve, the Romanian wiped out the last six games and sealed the seat with a breadstick.
He was never threatened with any barrier and converted three out of four break chances to his advantage.
On the whole, the 31-year-old penned down an amazing first serve share of 81 per cent as compared to the Spaniard’s 66 per cent and availed 30 out of 39 points on it. He also fired four aces and finished the deal with 62 points.
Next up for Hanescu is the local challenger, Aldin Setkic, in the pre-quarters. He bounced back to outclass Czech Republic’s Jan Mertl in a three-set thriller to set up this duel.
The seventh seed, Andreas Haider-Maurer from Austria, will join the Romanian in the proceeding round. He broke Bosnian and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur serve three times to formulate a 6-3, 6-2 score line.
The Austrian will face off another Bosnian rising star, Tomislav Brkic, who hit back at Slovakia’s Kamil Capkovic in a three-set nail-biter to set up this epic encounter.
