Victor Hanescu stomps over Carlos Gomez-Herrera in round one – Serbia Open 2012
Romanian star, Victor Hanescu, got the better of the Spanish qualifier, Carlos Gomez-Herrera, in three sets at the Serbia Open 2012 on Tuesday, He summed up a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory against the 22-year-old to power into the round of 16 at the SRPC Milan Gale
Muskatirovic in Belgrade.
The Romanian veteran remained on course to bid for his second year-to-date title at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event. After pocketing this match, Hanescu not only edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0
against the Spaniard but also advanced into the second round.
Hanescu blasted into the Belgrade red clay courts and went on a four-game tear before Gomez-Herrera could hold on. Later, he held his serve once more in the last game and pulled out the opener with a 6-2 score line.
671st ranked Gomez-Herrera got in game in the second set and plucked his entire serves after brushing off all four breakpoints he came across. He sought seven break opportunities and cashed in one to clinch the equaliser with a 7-5 score line.
Ranked 104th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Hanescu re-focused his strategy in the final set. After the Spaniard held his serve in the fifth game, the Romanian stroke out the last four games successively and pocketed the
decider by winning six games to three.
Summing up the Bucharest resident’s performance, Hanescu manifested a better first serve share of 76 per cent as opposed to his opponent’s 69 per cent and impressively marked 54 out of 74 points on it. He also fully capitalised on six double faults the Spaniard
committed and converted four out of 11 break opportunities to his advantage.
Up next for Hanescu is the Czech star, Lukas Rosol, who upset fifth seeded Lukasz Kubot in straight sets to set-up this encounter. The world number 79 was never challenged with any breakpoint and cashed in three out of 12 break chances to register a 7-5,
6-2 score line. He produced a slightly lower first serve share of 62 per cent but spectacularly clicked 27 out of 28 points on it.
