Victor Hanescu thrashes Sam Querrey in Chennai, wins in straight sets – Chennai Open 2012
30-year-old Romanian Victor Hanescu had no problems in silencing 24-year-old American Sam Querrey in the men’s singles first round match at the 2012 Chennai Open currently being held in Chennai, India. Their match was played on
January 3, 2012 in which Hanescu dominated with a straight set victory with scores of 6-3, 6-4.
Both players showed great form in the match as Hanescu retained a lead from the early goings of the competition with some great shots which rattled his opponent many times. Querrey, world number 93, anticipated a win in the first
round to move further into the tournament and increase his rankings. The American was at par with his opponent but he could not maintain the pressure as the match progressed as Hanescu leaped from behind to get a lead into the match.
In the first set, Hanescu swiftly moved ahead with his array of shots that kept Querrey on the defensive. The Romanian saved all of his breakpoints, which was a key factor in his dominant stance, which he expertly backed with his
service deliveries. Querrey looked confused when he could not get decent reply shots and lost valuable points. He conceded six double faults which were because of Querrey’s lack of consistency and unforced errors that kept coming regularly. Querrey looked
to capture the first set after he won three games but his opponent reduced his pace, overtaking him by winning six games and with it sealing the first set to his name.
The Romanian focused on the second set with an offensive approach to secure a win which he did with ease, but he did face resistance from Querrey, making things difficult for Hanescu. The American valiantly made a last effort to
send the match in a tie breaker by winning the second set and came close in doing so. He scored six aces with two double faults as he accelerated into the second set and won four games.
Both players pocketed nearly equal number of points from their first serve but Hanescu maintained his command by playing calculated shots. Querrey could have won the second set but his lack of confidence might have been the reason
he remained behind and could not capitalize on some mistakes which his opponent did. Hanescu will now Canadian Milos Raonic in the second round of the tournament, who is a world number 31 player, capable to beat Hanescu.
