Victor Hanescu undoes Andrey Golubev in straight sets at 2011 Barcelona Open
Romanian tennis pro Victor Hanescu recorded a straight-sets victory over Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev in the first round of the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-2. This win ensures Hanescu’s appearance
at the second round of the clay tournament, and took the Romanian player less than one hour and twenty-five minutes to accomplish.
It was an easy win for the Romanian pro, as he pushed ahead to an easy victory in the match. Although he did not score any aces in the first set, the pro managed to commit just one double fault. Golubev, on the other hand, fired
off two aces but somewhat negated the lead this gave him by committing two double faults. He was not in charge of the match from the get-go, however, and Hanescu broke him easily twice out of seven times. Golubev could only convert one break point against
Hanescu successfully. The Romanian fired a backhand down the court to win the first set of the match 6-3, with three more points than his opponent could muster.
The second set was even easier for Hanescu, who did not commit any double faults once again. Golubev scored two aces, but also double faulted once and was broken twice by his Romanian opponent. Hanescu managed to dodge every break
point opportunity. He concluded the match by taking the second set with a whopping 60 per cent of the total points, to set up a winning score-line of 6-3, 6-2.
Hanescu is currently ranked 22 spots lower than Golubev, who is World Number 44. The player is also 29 years old, which puts him at a disadvantage next to 23-year-old Andrey Golubev. However, the Romanian has also clocked in five
more years of pro experience than Golubev, who joined the tour in 2005. This advantage showed itself clearly today, as Hanescu undid his opponent with ease. The two players now have a head-to-head record of 1-all.
Victor Hanescu will now compete against fourteenth seed Kevin Anderson, or Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in the second round of the ATP World Tour 500 Series tournament.
