Victor Hanescu upsets Kevin Anderson at Barcelona Open second round
World Number 66 Victor Hanescu of Romania caused a splash at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell by ousting fourteenth seed Kevin Anderson in straight sets at the second round of the tournament. The unseeded pro managed to win
the match 6-4, 6-4 scoring his second year to date victory over Anderson. The match lasted just a little over one hour and thirty minutes.
The first set began as an equally balanced one for both players, although Victor Hanescu had a psychological advantage over his opponent because of his recent Auckland victory over Anderson. However, despite this, both players
managed to score three aces apiece without committing any double faults. Hanescu played the superior game, driving Anderson to break points five times and successfully converting one of those opportunities. The set consisted of five service and return games
apiece, and 60 points. Victor Hanescu won an impressive 34 points for 57 per cent, winning the first set 6-4.
The second set was similar to the first one, and Anderson seemed to face even more trouble to maintain his grip on the match. Although he scored three aces, the South African World Number 35 also committed two double faults. He
was unable to break his Romanian opponent even once during the match, although he himself was driven to seven break points in the second set. Hanescu managed to convert one of these. All in all, Hanescu scored four aces during the match and committed no double
faults, going on to break Kevin Anderson twice without being broken even once himself. He won the second round match after winning 73 of 129 points, for a 57 per cent figure. The final score-line was 6-4, 6-4 after a little over 90 minutes of gameplay.
Victor Hanescu, who is currently 29 years old, has won a single ATP career title so far. He will be facing fourth seed and Spanish Number 2 David Ferrer in the third round of the Barcelona Open, after the player ousted Carlos Berlocq
in his opening match at the tournament today.
