Victor Martinez could return in late August – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Victor Martinez played a key role in Detroit Tigers’ American League Central Division title winning campaign last season. As a designated hitter, Martinez displayed some high quality hitting skills. Not only is he a great hitter of the baseball but he also
has an ability to motivate his team mates when things are not working out for the team.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Martinez suffered a knee injury while participating in a routine practice session during the offseason. The injury was found to be of serious nature and Martinez had to get a surgery done on his knee to recover from a torn ACL.
It was later announced by Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski that the 33 year old catcher is expected to miss the entire 2012 season to recover from the injury.
According to the news published by a leading sports website, it is possible that Martinez will play late this season, in August. Martinez was supposed to have a reconstructive surgery on his knee last week. Trainer Kevin Rand gave his assessment on Wednesday,
saying that Martinez could make a comeback sooner than expected as reconstructive surgery is not needed anymore.
The Tigers have started the season on a very high note, emerging victorious in five out of their first six games and it may not be easy for Martinez to win back his place on Tigers’ big league roster. The right hander is likely to play minor league or Triple
A league before making his back to Major League Baseball.
The surgery was performed in late January and Martinez needs at least seven months to recover from it. Rand added that the earliest Martinez could play is in August. However, the fact the striker will have to take part in practice work outs before returning
to the MLB could delay his return.
Martinez is scheduled to have another MRI exam on his knew in early July, which will give us a better idea of whether he will be fit enough to play for the Tigers. Leyland and Dombrowski will be hoping that he gets fit and healthy as early as possible to
add more power to already impressive Tigers’ hitting lineup.
