Victor Martinez drives Detroit Tigers to 10-1 win over Cleveland Indians – MLB Update

Victor Martinez starred on the plate for the Detroit Tigers as they silenced the Cleveland Indians 10-1 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday, September 6 to push them to the third-spot in the American League Central division and wipe-out any
chances they had of qualifying for the postseason.
A five-run first inning coupled with Rick Porcello’s faultless start allowed the Tigers to impose immense pressure on the home-side. Martinez drove in three runs and scored two in his four at-bats to inflate his batting average to .325 for the season. The
designated hitter is not settling for anything less as the regular season approaches its end saying that there are still 20 more games to go and that the team has to continue performing even if the postseason spot is a surety.
Porcello has been effective in winning his starts this season and went a step ahead in this game when he leaked just three hits and a solitary run in his 6.1 innings to bring his ERA average down to 4.87 and register his 13th win for his win-loss
record to stand resolute at 13-8.
The only run off Porcello came in the seventh inning when Kosuke Fukudome smashed a home-run towards right outfield but this effort was not enough to counter the might of the Tigers. The Indians failed miserably in this game and will want to learn from this
outing as they look to shuffle their line-up for the next season.
Miguel Cabrera complimented Martinez in his five at-bats as he also scored two runs and drove in one to improve his batting average to .331 for the season. The Tigers are now shaping-up well for the playoffs and a consistency in their performance might give
them a fair chance of competing at terms with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
Pitching has been a grave situation for the Indians this season and Fausto Carmona’s 14th loss did not help this concern. Carmona was unglued for seven runs amid eight hits in just 1.1 innings to see his ERA surge to 5.18 for the season.
